Cheyenne, OK – Congressman Frank Lucas (OK-03) released the following statement on the passing of Congressman Don Young (R-Alaska):

“For more than 17,900 days, Don Young wasn’t just a part of the institution of Congress- he was an institution of his own right. With a larger-than-life personality- with that all too well known Don Young gruff- and a heart that was as big as the state of Alaska, the Dean exemplified the best of the United States House of Representatives.

“As the longest serving Member- having first been elected during the Nixon Administration- Don Young’s service to his beloved Alaska and his country succeeded the terms of 10 Presidents and 9 Speakers. Along the way, Don served as Chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee and House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee never leaving anyone to doubt his dedication to public service and ability to form unforgettable friendships across the political spectrum.

“But throughout my tenure in Congress- and as the entire House would agree- once you got to know Don Young, one quickly understood just how much the people of Alaska and the state itself meant to Don. While the rest of the country looks at Alaska as the last frontier, Don worked tirelessly for his state and always viewed Alaska and it’s people with endless admiration and prosperity. As a Member of Congress, there is no better definition of a selfless Member of Congress than the Dean of the House, Don Young.

“My sympathies and prayers are with Anne, his children, and all those whose lives were touched by Don Young. While I and the entire House will miss you Don, rest assured the House is a better body because of your presence.”
