Washington, DC – Congressman Frank Lucas (OK-03) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed S. 2938, the U.S. Senate’s gun legislation:

“Oklahoma has made it clear: Oklahomans believe in the fundamental right to bear arms. Earlier this month, House Democrats rushed to eliminate the rights of law-abiding citizens, and today’s legislation similarly follows suit. Oklahomans- and all Americans- support additional funds for school security and means to address mental health, but Congress has no right to criminalize routine firearm transactions, curtail the right of law-abiding citizens under the age of 21, or incentivizes states to adopt gun confiscation orders. I am committed to finding solutions that protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans while addressing our nation’s mental health crisis and making our schools safer for students and teachers.

Just earlier this week, I supported and voted for the Restoring Hope for Mental Health and Well-Being Act, which supports community health services addressing emotional disturbances through crisis-care and other early intervention activities. The bill also supports effective programs helping children and adolescents who are struggling with stress, anxiety, and social isolation. We must make our communities safer without jeopardizing individuals’ constitutional rights.”
