Cheyenne, OK – Congressman Frank Lucas (OK-03) today released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Justice announced that the City of Guthrie was a recipient of the Department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) Community Policing Development (CPD) program funding. The City of Guthrie, which was one of three awardees in Oklahoma, was awarded $75,000 in funding to advance the practice of community policing law enforcement.

“The United States was built on the principle of the Rule of Law. Working toward justice in our nation is not achieved by defunding the police; but instead, by ensuring state and local law enforcement have the training, tools, and personnel necessary to protect and serve our communities,” said Congressman Lucas. “I’m proud to support the Justice Department’s COPS programs and applaud the City of Guthrie for continuing to implement effective and supportive law enforcement practices to ensure the community and those who call it home remain safe.”

Community Policing Development program funds are used to develop the capacity of law enforcement to implement community policing by providing guidance on promising practices through the development and testing of innovative strategies; building knowledge about effective practices and outcomes; and supporting new, creative approaches to preventing crime and promoting safe communities.

Lucas supported the program’s funding last year and this year throughout Congress’ regular appropriations process.
