Congress Misses Opportunity to Pass Bipartisan COVID-19 Relief

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Frank Lucas (OK-03) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1319- the American Rescue Plan Act. Lucas opposed the legislation.

“Today, Congress missed a significant opportunity to focus on the real needs of the American people. Instead of working with Republicans to deliver a sixth bipartisan relief package, President Biden and Democrats are putting their political agenda ahead of America’s working class,” said Congressman Lucas. “Like Congress’ five previous COVID relief packages, our efforts should have been targeted, temporary, and tied to COVID-19: Let’s be clear, the best economic stimulus is directly supporting those most in need, safely getting people back to work, and getting shots in the arms of our fellow Americans.

“Instead, Congress is doling out state and local aid to states who were spared budget shortfalls, we’re administering billions of dollars in funds that won’t be used until years from now, and- what could be most detrimental- we’re pouring an inflation accelerant on an already warming economy. Simply put, this is the wrong plan, at the wrong time, and for all the wrong reasons.”
